Antique Chinese Tea Caddy. Late 19th century Elm Wood carved gilt red lacquered brass banded tea caddy. In very good condition a beautiful example. Tea caddies of this larger size where mostly used for large gatherings. Holding a large tea pot of hot tea with the spout protruding from the opening center top front. A Tea Caddy this size would be heavy once filled with a full teapot inside. A Tea Caddy of this nature would be to present the Tea keeping the tea warm. The tea pot’s spout comes out the front opening for pouring. The carving and design would symbolize region and status. This Tea Caddy is credited to be from Sichuan in the 1890s. The construction is very well done. The Handle has a sliding bar lock mechanism that hold the top down secure in good working order. In very good condition. Original condition lightly hand polished with furniture oil. It has wear to the finish that can be expected of a piece of this age but is in remarkably good condition with no missing pieces or major damage.
